In Synaptic, you can downgrade by selecting a package and hitting CTRL+E or Package>Force Version in the menu. However, when I tried downgrading the packages, I couldn't get X working at all. In fact, this problem is mentioned by Vikrant and Suku previously. In other words, don't downgrade the mesa packages because it could break your configuration worse (until you re-upgrade mesa)!
