This also affects 2.6.24-19-generic on Ubuntu Hardy. I'm using a AMD Phenom(tm) 9550 Quad-Core Processor and was attempting to narrow down a VMware-player networking problem by disabling the other cores. The system fails to boot, getting stuck near the ehci_hcd (USB) and fd0 messages. It's not freezing as it responds to the keyboard Ctrl-Alt- Delete and the magic SysRq key sequences. I'm using a LUKS/dm-crypt encrypted root and would expect a password prompt somewhere in there but I'm not seeing one. The prompt may be causing the halt or it's failing earlier and not getting that far. While this won't affect most users it may cause problems for troubleshooting SMP hardwre issues and points to a weakness in the kernel or initrd scripts.
The VMware problem was due to the network device name changing caused by moving the drives from another system so was unrelated to SMP. -- -12 kernels don't boot with nosmp or maxcpus=0 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/94192 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
