Reuben, it is useful to test if bugs you report for KDE 4.0 are fixed in KDE 4.1 since the latter will be in Intrepid and does already fix many problems. I recommend you use project neon kde-nightly packages to do this, as you can install those alongside your KDE 4.0.
For KDE 4.1, although it is now included with Kubuntu Intrepid alphas, for now it would be most effective to report bugs directly to bugs.kde.org. Thank you for testing and reporting your problems! For your compositing issue, try searching and/or asking on ubuntuforums.org or kubuntuforums.net or the kubuntu-users mailing list for help getting it working. Though FWIW, desktop effects work with nvidia-glx-new without any tweaking on both my systems. As to this bug, I don't think XGL is a supported configuration and since it's a beta, you may need to remove your .kde4 (back up your old one ;) ) to get it working again.
