Jamie, thanks for the patch, it is much appreciated. To help people test this (all above warnings apply) I made packages with this patch applied (xscreensaver - 5.05-1ubuntu3~xrandr2 ) in my PPA (personal package archive), for Ubuntu Intrepid.
