You should not have to reboot to end a non responsive application, as
long as the rest of "x" is still working.
Open a terminal, type the command "xkill" (without the quotes).
Your cursor is now an application killer, just put it over the
application that won't die and left click once.
There are other non-gui ways to do it also, but I suspect, this would
have worked for you here.
