Public bug reported:

In /etc/defoma/hints/ttf-inconsolata.hints, there is a line saying

  Width = Variable

which is wrong. The patch at the end of this message corrects this. Note
that this is logically unrelated to debian bug 455710
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=455710), which is
about a different bug in the same file. This patch does *not* seem to
solve https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emacs22/+bug/230809,
which I suggested might be the case in a comment there.
