I'm seeing the same problem.  It's only gone to black and white twice
now (in 3 months or so), and adjusting color balance under edit -
preferences - display, but I'm not sure what causes it.

If you hit "reset to defaults" you get some very very wrong colors.  I
think it might be gstreamer and not totem thats at fault because I've
seen bug reports before of gstreamer causing color problems.

If it helps, I'm using a Lenovo N200, the video is 00:02.0 VGA
compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

It looks like Xorg is using an "intel" driver.

I launch totem generally by using "gnome-open" on the command line, and
I don't see errors from gstreamer related to the video.  The second time
it went black and white it was on a video I've played before without
issues.  I closed and reopened the video after adjusting color balance
and it's still in color.

This is a pretty big issue for me because although I can manually adjust
the colors, I don't know whats truly correct.  I get it close, but it
still looks like there may be something wrong.
