Christian - The Hardy server flavour only has CONFIG_X86_PAE set, which is sufficient for that class of 32 bit servers. CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G has some regressions for DMA support in 2.6.24, which is of interest on the desktop where those DMA challenged devices are more likely to be in use. More then 4GB RAM in a desktop/laptop has not been much of an issue for Hardy, but it will clearly be of interest for Intrepid (which currently has CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G=y for the generic 32 bit flavour). If you have more then 4GB then you should consider the amd64 flavour (which will require a re-installation because we don't support 32 bit user space on a 64 bit kernel for x86_64).
