I have this issue with Xubuntu 8.04. I haven't tested it with the Ubuntu disk. Only I get no error messages, I just don't get prompted to restart the system, it simply exits the installer and leaves me at the Live CD desktop. Then when I reboot I get Grub Error 15. I built the Grub installation manually (copying the files or creating them) to boot into the system, but the system won't let me log in and has the wrong machine name and time zone.
This is pretty critical if you ask me.
