Just to update, I uninstalled the WebDeveloper plugin several days ago, and the issue eventually did crop up again. (FF2 & 3, WinXP Pro SP2). I think the problem with this bug is that there's no way to know what triggers it. It could be hours, or even days between when the bug crops up and when you encounter it; I don't manually enter URLs all that often.
