evince 2.22.2-0ubuntu, it behaves like there is a memory leak that is suppressed by a garbage collector: the amount of reserved memory grows when doing operations with a pdf document (like zooming and scrolling). When the document is left still, evince returns some part of the memory to the system. For many pdf files the amount of reserved memory is so big, however, that the system gets freezed with overswapping. xpdf takes about 30 times less memory for browsing the same file (12M virtual memory xpdf, 300M physical memory evince). Something is very wrong with evince. If this is a minor bug (major desktop component not working), what kind of major bugs are here?! After upgrading from 6.10 to 8.04 I am seriosly considering looking for a linux distribution of better quality.
