I agree that the major problem is dependencies. In fact, in this age with high-speed internet and cheap disk space, I think that many packages go too far with their dependencies. I would very much like to see an additional 10 50k libraries (half a meg) added to a download than have to jump through hoops each time I want to install a program, and possibly break other programs along the way.
