you can try one last thing to prevent the rtl8187 ubuntu driver from
being loaded

sudo nautilus

then go to

/lib/modules/yourkernelversion/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtl8187

and move rtl8187.ko and r8187.ko to another place (your home directory
is ok). If you can't find those files, check also the wireless directory
just before the rtl8187 directory, which you may not find. Also, you may
also find only one of these two files, do not worry, it's ok.

then run

rmmod rtl8187

rmmod r8187

ignore eventual warnings then:

sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

then:

sudo depmod -ae

after that, try to connect with wicd. If it doesn't work, reboot and try
again, maybe issuing sudo modprobe ndiswrapper before connecting.

@McWatt

to have wicd started after boot go to system-->preferences-->sessions
and add this command:

/opt/wicd/tray.py

if you don't have wired connection and wireless connection, you should
check wicd preferences and see if you put the right interfaces there.
mine are eth0 for wired and wlan0 for wireless, but yours may be
different. check them before installing wicd running

iwconfig
