Couple of notes: 0) I confused myself. I am not running Compiz on the xubuntu sony. I am using the compositor under "Window Manager Tweaks" in the Xfce settings manager. (Compiz is running on one of the other of 3 laptops, and I am working on all of them pretty much simultaneously).
1) Using the Xfce compositor, transparency works just fine for the modified terminal. 2) The first character of the diff file above is missing (don't ask me why!).
