Turns out my problem was indeed caused by gxine. I ran xvattr and saw it was set to 180. Set it to 0. Ran gxine, and got the same color distortion. Ran xvattr again and saw it had been reset to 180. Set it back to 0 and reran xine instead of gxine. Colors all good. Now I have my colors working, but I have a different issue with no sound on startup with xine. Still, that's a separate issue - thx so much for the tip.
