On gentoo I use hibernate-script and got it working with this config
from /etc/hibernate/common.conf

### vbetool
EnableVbetool yes
RestoreVbeStateFrom /var/lib/vbetool/vbestate
# VbetoolPost yes
# RestoreVCSAData yes

I think to restore the vbestate isn't necessary (as on ubuntu) but
VbetoolRestoreState() from /usr/share/hibernate/scriptlets.d/vbetool
will do the "quirk" with the dpms stuff.
