Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: foomatic-db-hpijs

When I previously ran Gutsy 32-bit, my HP PSC-2175 all-in-one printer
was automatically installed and everything Just Worked with no fiddling.
However, after installing upgrading to Hardy 64-bit, I've noticed very
slow printing performance and very poor print quality. I spent a while
looking into this today and found that Hardy auto-installed the
Gutenprint driver for a PSC-2150, whereas Gutsy had been using
foomatic/hpijs for a PSC-2170. I tried to manually reconfigure CUPS to
use the foomatic/hpijs driver but the PSC-2170 option no longer appears
in the list, although some other printers do. Then I went to
linuxprinting.org and manually downloaded and installed a PPD file from
there and now it indicates the foomatic/hpijs PSC-2170 driver and my
speed and quality are back to normal.

I don't know why the hpijs driver for this printer was removed from
Hardy, but I strongly recommend that it be replaced because the
Gutenprint driver is not a satisfactory replacement. I remember being
very impressed with how Gutsy Just Worked, and I'm disappointed to find
that Hardy has regressed back to requiring manual configuration.
