Same here. After an apt-upgrade a few days ago the sound is gone. Everything worked before. The system is Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE4.
if i do fuser -k /dev/snd/* and sudo modprobe -r snd_hda_intel && sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel i get a kde message that photon found a new hardware und uses it. now the sound works in kde. Again: Everything worked a few days ago (kubuntu 8.04, kde4).
