However fix is included in 2.2.0 branch. And Ubuntu 8.04 holds 2.2.1 of intel-driver. "code_n_coffee" posted here that his problems started with 2.2.1. I never tested whether downgrading to some Ubuntu/Debian 2.2.0 fixed it as well.
