Actually, after seeing your logs, there is something wrong with /sbin
/update-grub...

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-17-generic

Also please adjust your /etc/kernel-img.conf, it seems to be out of date
(calling /sbin/update-grub instead of /usr/sbin/update-grub).
