I have the exact same problem. When I try to run /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r nothing 
happens and /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-trash gives: "Added new job source 0x8075808 
(GVfsBackendTrash)
Queued new job 0x8076820 (GVfsJobMount)
send_reply, failed: 0
register_mount_callback, mount_reply: (nil), error: 0x8073840
Mount failed: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Mountpoint 
Already registered"
Like Sebastien, it happened on Ubuntu 8.04 after a recent upgrade. Very 
annoying for a noob like me who was looking for a more reliable OS.
