Okay, then we need to figure out what kind of freeze you're
encountering, whether its the kernel, the drivers, X or the hardware
itself.  Does the capslock key still work?

If you're feeling particularly adventuresome, you might try some remote
debugging.  If you can find another computer and two spare serial ports,
connect them by a "null modem cable" (different than your regular serial
cable) and see if any strange messages come up during the freeze, or if
you still get occasional --MARK-- messages. http://wiki.sangoma.com
