Latest discovery points to a problem with Hardy, not Alsa. My 64bit Hardy installation is an in situ upgrade from Gutsy and appears to lack the soundcore module specified as a prerequisite by the Alsa Project. The 32bit Gutsy install, on which the Xonar is working, does possess the module. Running apt-get install linux-ubuntu-modules has not solved this problem.
