I can confirm this indeed fixes the problem. After upgrading to xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.2.1-1ubuntu13.3 (which incorporates the xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.2.1-1ubuntu13.2 patch) opening and closing the lid works properly.
