I intend to update mail-notification to 5.x for debian as soon as possible (as time permits). There are many changes from 4.x to 5.x which require special attention. Among those changes are the switch from autotools to Jean-Yves' own build system. That said, any help is appreciated. I'd gladly welcome a co-maintainer.
