OK, I uninstalled gaim. "sudo dpkg -l | grep gaim" shows no packages, nothing installed. I used synaptic to remove the packages with the "remove completely" checked for each.
I deleted .gaim with "rm -rf ~/.gaim" Now, I install gaim: "sudo apt-get install gaim" Selecting previously deselected package gaim-data. I run gaim from the Applications->Internet menu and set up an AIM account. I see I'm logged in, I see my contacts. At this point, I have no gaim icon on the top gnome bar like I used to. It used to appear up by my clock. Now it's missing. If I click Tools->Plugins, I see that there is a "System Tray Icon 2.0.0beta3.1" listed which is already checked. If there is supposed to be an applet running in ps for gaim, it's not there. Now, I click the x in the upper right of the Buddy List. This used to close the Buddy List but the system tray icon kept me logged in and receiving messages. [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ $ ps auxww | grep gaim jeff 26179 0.0 0.1 1904 680 pts/7 S+ 14:09 0:00 grep gaim As you can see, gaim is gone, not running. This was a very generic install of gaim running on dapper. I upgraded to edgy a couple days ago using synaptic. I'm using the default gnome window manager and window layout. I really have no idea what else could be interfering with this. Thanks for your help.
