I've been trying to help with this a bit so I'll take the liberty of summarizing:
7.10: 1440x900 with DVI works as it should 8.04: 1440x900 with DVI hardlocks the machine completely, networking and everything dies 8.04 with kernel from 7.10: same as for 8.04.
