tvst, Firstly, enable the hardy-proposed repository and grab version 2.6.24-17-generic of the kernel, that may help eliminate stuttering (even without PulseAudio). Also, your comments re: removing your asound.conf seem odd. As far as I know, dmix is setup by default in ALSA when no asound.conf file is present.
