I also have this problem. I installed Timidity in synaptic, then I got
this error. Now every time I try to install ANYTHING in synaptic, it
still attempts to resolve this timidity problem, and I get the error
every single time I try to update anything in synaptic. I installed
timidity so I could get midi playback in Chocolate Doom (linux port of
doom). The weird thing is midi playback through timidity works, meaning
it must have installed somehow, yet its giving me this error. When I
uninstall timidity, the error obviously goes away, and I no longer hear
midi playback in the game. Upon reinstallation, the error returns and
midi playback works again. I ran

sudo dpkg --configure -a

and got this:

Setting up timidity (2.13.2-19ubuntu1) ...
   ...fail!
invoke-rc.d: initscript timidity, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing timidity (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 timidity

and I don't have "exult" installed, so it must be a timidity issue
