The scrolling improves alot if you set general.smoothScroll to false in about:config.
I hit this issue at http://www.timothysykes.com/ with Firefox 3.0b5 unmasked Gentoo package. (I run Gentoo) The performance was atrocious to the point of unusable - disabling smooth scrolling makes it alot faster but not perfect.
