The issue is most probably an I/O error reading the CD (for example, a
driver problem), rather than squashfs per se.  I'd just like to verify
this hypothesis by opening a terminal and trying the following:

sudo dd if=/dev/scd0 of=/dev/zero

and see if there are any I/O read errors (showing up as  sb_bread
failures in the kernel log - one should be able see these using dmesg).

Please can you try this and let me know the results of this test.  Then
I can see if we can find any suitable workarounds.
