I've been having precisely the same problem, with the same rt61 chipset. I followed Leann's advice and installed linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-16-generic vie synaptic, and it seems to have done the trick! no more freezes or flashing caps lock! Thank you all! I only wish i found this earlier!
