Further Info running compiz from a terminal showed unable to find /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager Googling I found information on a diversion that was stopping compiz, and ran. <code> sudo dpkg-divert --rename --remove /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager <code/> with the result Removing `diversion of /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager to /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager.ubuntu by xorg-driver-fglrx'
I now have desktop effects but this unsupported value issue has appeared when running compiz from a terminal. $ compiz Checking for Xgl: not present.
