Actually I was able to get splashy working by activating the framebuffer. You need to add "vesafb" and "fbcon" (without the quotes) to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and un-blacklist vesafb from /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer Update the initramfs "sudo update-initramfs -u" and add the vga=xxx line to the boot parameters.
