ubuntu 8.04 amd64 up-to-date, nvidia glx-new
after botting up, the VT-1 virtual terminal contains this text "kernel
alive" at bottom, which then gets erased as you use this terminal.
So it seems like a small bug - lack of clear screen after bootup is done
