I've been working on pc's with the same chipset (KM400 with the VT8378) and have had similar issues. In the 8.04 install it may be using either the xserver-xorg-via driver or the xserver-xorg-openchrome driver. I've had resolution issues with both. In the end I installed the xserver- xorg-unichrome driver which cleared up my issues.
Can you confirm which driver you are using please? Just upload a copy of your xorg.conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf). Please also check in the Synaptic Package Manager if you have the xserver-xorg-unichrome package installed. I suspect that you do not.
