The Ubuntu change in 0.44ubuntu1 can be dropped. Its purpose was to change this 
call in autogenerated debian/rules:

$(MAKE) distclean

into

-$(MAKE) distclean

However, version 0.45 replaces this with an even better and more
Lintian-friendly alternative:

[ ! -f Makefile ] || $(MAKE) distclean
