Ok, it seems to be fixed.

After the fresh install, it still wasn't working with my father's
account, but this time it worked with a fresh user, so I assumed it was
somewhere in a config file in my father's home.

I simply deleted the whole ~/.sane folder, and launched xsane again. I
had done that previously, to no avail.

And this time, it worked !

I would say thanks, but since nobody ever answered me nor asked for more
info FOR 2 WHOLE YEARS, while I offered to help solving this problem, it
feels somewhat inappropriate to thank anyone (except the stock answer
who made me check again).

Anyway, problem solved, I guess.
