I've encountered a similar problem, the difference being that ubuntu does not recognise the sound card when it is plugged in (also Edirol UA-25). In ubuntu 7.04 I had a notification that the device was detected and it worked immediately. In 8.04, in System-preferences-sound the UA-25 is not listed under 'devices', although the computers onboard soundcard (realtek) is. When I run the tests I hear nothing, having tried different playback options including 'Autodetect' and 'ALSA'. When I plug my speakers into the computers onboard soundcard it works fine.
