Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub-installer

(Lots of reports of grub-related problems, but I couldn't find anything
that seemed to match this.)

The one-off error is for an existing Ubuntu on a separate partition. In
the menu.lst file that is pasted in below, the first entries are for the
new Ubuntu installation, which is okay (of course). The Windows part at
the end is also fine. However the entries in between that refer to the
original Ubuntu on /dev/hda2 are incorrect (except for the first one,
which I corrected by hand). The root= command in those entries says
/dev/hda3, even though the other references are correct.

Not sure if any of these details matter, but the original installation
in /dev/hda2 was Breezy Badger in English (later upgraded to Dapper
Drake). The new installation in the /dev/hda7 partition was also Breezy,
but installed in Japanese (and also upgraded to Dapper afterwards).

Almost sure this part doesn't matter, but is a different bug... The new
installation seems to run perfectly, but the old one seems slightly
funky now. Certain tasks will throw it into a highly unresponsive state,
with even the mouse cursor basically dead. However, it will eventually
complete the tasks and return to normal, though it make take an hour or
two. Checking for updates is one of the problematic tasks, but so far
I've made little progress in diagnosing it.
