I can confirm the same is true on a Dell D820 with the 3945ABG chipset (same chip, smaller laptop). Please integrate the solution as an automatic update so newcomers to Ubuntu and novice users do not get turned off to the distro because this overwhelmingly popular chipset doesn't work without intermediate skill level fixes.
