I don't know if anyone is still having issues with this, but since the newest open-source radeon drivers support aiglx and 2d acceleration for my card, I no longer need to use Xgl and have exterminated it from my system like the rodent it is. So my suggestion is don't use Xgl unless you NEED it....which I doubt anyone really needs Xgl in the first place.
