I am also experiencing this same problem with an install of hardy heron 8.04 upgraded from gutsy gibbon 7.10 the problem first appeared in one of the late alphas , another box very similar ( both amd64x2 both Nvidia cards and Nvidia propriatary driver) with a fresh install at beta and updated to final does not give this problem . system>quit takes more than 1 minute to display the shutdown dialog during which time the destop is active and updating information in screenlets etc but does not recieve clicks . after the shutdown dialog apears and either restart or shutdown is selected a terminal with the last line being , Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) then hangs for a variable amount of time until the logout progress bar appears . ctrl>alt>bkspc will unhang it at any point and the shutdown then proceeds normaly .
