** Summary changed:

- Sound STILL not working
+ SoundBlaster Live: sound STILL not working

** Description changed:

I upgraded my Ubuntu distro to 8.04, but i have this problem since 7.10
version: sound doesn't work properly.
In previous versions sound worked with some issue: I could open audio once a
time (for example i could listen audio from an internet page only if there
wasn't anything that used sound). And that was a golden age.
Now, with 8.04, sound doesn't work at all. Only Rithmbox runs without
problems, but with all the other applications there's no sound. When i open an
audio or video file, it starts to do some BEEEP. VLC sometimes plays audio for
a few seconds, then starts to beeps. It isn't a beep, but a beeping rustle.

Please help me! I've tried everything: refreshing kernels or removing
and installing for a second time the alsa files. I've tried all the
official and unofficial guides to resolve audio problems, but nothing
  worked.

It's a big matter: i need to resolve this problem, because i have no
other way to watch videos or listening audio files and i can't remove
and re-install ubuntu! I'm in your hands.

I don't know what I have to post for help you to help me. Just ask, I'll
  do.

Thanks and sorry for the bad english
+
+ PS here's a news
+ i tried to change some settings in "audio preferences" and testing ALSA, ESD
and OSS. there's the error message:
+
+ audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
+ gconfaudiosink: Impossibile aprire il device audio per la riproduzione.
+ Il device รจ utilizzato da un'altra applicazione.
