I'm going to put this one to "invalid" for now. The graying out just means that firefox is not responding, possibly because of the website you visit (either a problem with the website, or a problem with firefox).
Your best option would be to report the problem upstream via http://hendrix.mozilla.org/ (via the firefox website) or in firefox itself using Help/Report Broken website if you can still use firefox before it becomes grayed out.
