A nice solution infact is in the site http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download I tried it and without recompiling the kernel or adding any patch it work very well with my Compaq 6720s. It give the source to compile the modules of wifi cards compatible with kernel 2.6.24 (in the case of Hardy in my case it works without any patch).
