Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic
Hi there, On a desktop machine that was running Gutsy's kernel 2.6.22-14-generic with no problem, and upgrade to Hardy shows that the new 2.6.24-16-generic kernel is absolutely unbootable on the machine. Whatever boot option taken (including tries of "acpi=off", "noapic", "nolapic", etc...) the kernel crashes at boot, ending with : « BUG : soft lockup-CPU#0 stuck for 11 s ! » This situation is "100% stable and reproductible". (Reported by user, I'm 650 kms away from this machine...) Hardy can be used with old Gutsy's 2.6.22-14 kernel, which raises other issues (corresponding headers got uninstalled by upgrade, old 2.6.22-14 kernel headers package now unavailable in Hardy so can't reinstall it, new NVidia drivers package won't run with old kernel, all this forcing to basically manually an "old kernel headers tree" then compile NVIdia drivers from NVidia site). It's a pain in the *** that not only the new kernel doesn't work but the upgrade process removes old kernel headers and that newly installed driver packages would only run with the new kernel :-( Anyway this issue of 2.6.24-16 not running one some hardware where previous kernels would looks like a show-stopper to me.
