All I did was follow Valentin's exact steps above. Then I made sure that ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE was set to 'true' in /etc/default/acpi-support. That was all that was needed for me.
The hdparm commands are already in /etc/acpi/power.sh; they were just not being executed at the needed time, for me.
