On further examination, it appears that this suspend/resume problem is not in the hibernate layer, but probably in the gnome power management layer on top of that. If I open a root shell in X windows and execute /etc/apci/hibernate.sh directly, everything works fine. X Windows comes back fully functional. It's only when I use the gnome power management widget to suspend that something goes amiss and X windows does not recover.
