I seem to have simmilar/same problem Ubuntu 8.04 amd64, nvidia 8600gt, nvidia's binary driver; KDE is slooowwwwwww (drawing a START menu takes 3 seconds etc) gnome is ok (apart from XGL crashing all the time, as reported in different bugs)
